It was just a dream. There was no seeping cold that clawed at his flesh. There was no smell of burnt hair, washed away by the scent of a cold winter night. It was dead quiet. He was still in his bed, his home, in the cradling darkness.
He stood up, walked over to the window into the small beam of faint, mellow light that broke in between the curtains. Where his eyes saw nothing, his body remembered the pain. There were no burns or marks from the chains he was tied with. There was nothing but a presence in his mind causing him to hurt. Wordless, soundless, fainter than the most distant memory. Yet he was certain he could hear it. No, he could feel it, taste in his mouth the blood of another.
Pulling apart the curtains he looked up. The Brothers and the many stars that made them up were there, watching him, beckoning him to rise up and join them. His heart was beating ever faster, yet its rhythm in his ears was muffled, unwanted. He swallowed and with a shaking hand opened the window to reach towards the sky, grasping at something, begging for it to answer.
